Merida
Photo Smurf Adventure 2010 was two nights in Merida, the capital of the
state of Yucatan in Mexico. Merida is the starting point for many
companies, it is also the gateway to the Mayan world, Puerta al Mundo
Maya. Not far away is also the National Park Celestune with its thousands
of flamingos.
History of Merida
Before moving out of the Spaniards in the 16th century there was a large
Payramidenartige platform on the base of which the city stood Ti ho. The
Great Pyramid Baklu'mchan measured about 120 m long and 10 m high.
Unfortunately, the Spaniard, or better the Fransikaner monks have this
structure completely destroyed and the stones used for the construction of
the Fort San Benito. Too bad. Presumably the city for the Maya was just as
important as Uxmal and Chichen Itza. Fortunately, these buildings were left
by the Spanish conquerors as they found it.
On 01.06.1542, the city whose 'meaning in the Mayan language "five" was
renamed to Merida. The Spanish city of Merida has a high number of
buildings of Roman origin and their residues. Francisco de Montejo was
reminded by the buildings of the Maya in Merida in Spain. As a result of
Thao was' finally Merida.
Today in Merida
In the center of some 750,000 inhabitants comprehensive city has a lovely
old town with many restaurant, bars and markets. Driving in the city is a bit
exhausting for West Europeans, because you're not used to a lot of
honking and overhauled the right or left.
Photo Schlumpfs adventure but was very happy in the city.
